Patricia Verdugo Aguirre is a Chilean journalist who has written a dozen books about human rights abuses in Chile under the dictatorship of General Pinochet. Her dedication to seeking justice and democracy for her country began in 1976 after her father, a Christian Democratic leader in Chile, was assassinated for political reasons. The next year she co-founded the magazine Hoy (Today) which spoke out against Pinochet's dictatorship throughout his reign. In 1983 she co-founded the Women's Movement for Life which helped to organize protests against human rights abuses in Chile. Patricia Verdugo continues to be a vibrant voice for justice and democracy. She was nominated for the 2005 Nobel Peace Prize as part of the 1000 Women for the Nobel Peace Prize project.
