Lawangina
Khan is an Afghani community health worker with the Swedish Committee for Afghanistan.
She helped train 30 midwives to work in villages which have no access to medical
facilities. Lawangina Khan also worked as a peacebuilder and negotiator between
women of rival groups along the Afghanistan-Pakistan border. She was chosen as
a consultant on women's issues during the historic 2004 elections in Afghanistan.
For her continuing efforts to improve the economic, political and social status
of women in Afghanistan, Lawangina Khan was nominated for the 2005 Nobel Peace
Prize as part of the 1000 Women for the Nobel Peace Prize project.
