Corita Kent entered the Roman Catholic order of the Sisters of the Immaculate Heart of Mary in Los Angeles at the age of 18 and lived and worked in the Immaculate Heart Community for 30 years. During that time she was known as Sister Mary Corita Kent, and was a teacher and the chair of the art department at Immaculate Heart College. She left the order in 1968 and moved to Boston to devote herself full-time to her art. Corita Kent worked primarily with silk-screening and much of her work focused on the themes of love, peace and the sacred. Many of her posters became quite popular in the 1960s and 1970s. In 1985 she designed the "Love" stamp. More than 700 million of these stamps were sold, making it one of the best selling postage stamps in history.
