Dubbed
"The Sturgeon General" and "Her Deepness," Marine biologist Sylvia Earle was named
Time magazine's first 'Hero for the Planet' in 1998. Sylvia Earle fell in love
with the sea at the age of three and grew up to become one of the world's foremost
experts on marine ecosystems, including the impact of oil spills. She has led
more than 60 underwater expeditions totaling more than 7000 hours, has written
more than 125 publications, and works with numerous organizations and foundations
involved in marine research, policy and conservation. As the explorer-in-residence
for the National Geographic Society, Sylvia Earle, continues to explore and protect
underwater habitats.
