For
forty years, as editor of Saturday Review, Norman Cousins was able to help
influence world thought on some of the most important issues facing humanity --
environmental issues, world peace, global governance, justice, freedom, holistic
health and nuclear disarmament. He served as president of United World Federalists
and as the first cochair of the National Committee for a Sane Nuclear Policy (SANE).
As an unofficial citizen diplomat he helped convince the United States and the
Soviet Union to sign the Soviet-American nuclear test ban treaty. The many awards
he received for his dedication to a better world include the Eleanor Roosevelt
Peace Award, the Family of Man Award, the United Nations Peace Medal and the Albert
Schweitzer Prize for Humanitarianism.
