George Clooney is an Academy Award and Golden Globe-winning actor who has not been afraid to make controversial films that seek to change the world for the better. Once called People Magazine's 'Sexiest Man Alive' in 2006, he became the first person in Academy Award history to be nominated for acting in one film, Syriana, and directing another, Good Night and Good Luck. Both of these films were sharp criticisms of the system that allows our government to erode civil liberties due to corporate interests and the ideological beliefs of a few individuals. George Clooney also spoke out about genocide in Darfur after a visit there in 2006 where he saw first hand the atrocities that have been committed. He urged the United States and NATO to become more involved in intervening, and testified before the UN Security Council to urge UN Peacekeepers to help bring order to Darfur. In 2008, George Clooney was named a United Nations Messenger of Peace to help raise support for United Nations peacekeeping efforts.
