Hafsat
Abiola is a human rights and democracy activist from Nigeria, whose activism arose
after a series of tragic family events. In 1993, the Nigerian military government
decided to hold a democratic election for president. Hafsat's father, Chief Moshood
Abiola won the election, but instead of being allowed to take office, he was imprisoned.
His wife, Kudirat Abiola was assassinated for leading a campaign to try to free
her husband. In honor of her mother, Abiola founded KIND, (Kudirat Institute for
Nigerian Democracy) which works to empower women and youth and advance democracy
and development in Africa. She travels around the world to share her story and
her passion for justice and democracy, inspiring many other women and youth to
work for a better world.
