Grace Abbott was a social worker who greatly helped advance child welfare laws in America, especially promoting lawmaking policies that protected children from being treated with the harsh penalties exacted on adult lawbreakers. She chaired many committees and organizations to promote children's rights, and spent much of her life as a political lobbyist in Washington, working for these causes. She was also a key figure in the formation of the Social Security Administration and helped draft the Social Security Act.
